UK broadband continues to improve as average speed hits 14.7Mbps

UK REGULATOR Ofcom announced today that the UK's average broadband speed reached 14.7Mbps in May, up from 12Mbps in March.
Despite Akamai's claims that the UK is still averaging speeds of around 7Mbps, Ofcom said today that average speeds reached 14.7Mbps in May. According to the regulator this is a 22 percent increase compared to six months ago and an 64 percent improvement from last year.

Perhaps most impressively, Ofcom said this shows an increase of 309 percent compared to November 2008, when it first began publishing speeds, with the average five years ago having been just 3.6Mbps.
Ofcom Consumer Group director Claudio Pollack said, "With the average household now owning more than three types of internet-connected devices, consumers are demanding more than ever from their broadband service.
